Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about AI crawler detection in SummitCite.

How does SummitCite detect AI crawlers?

SummitCite hooks into the WordPress template_redirect action and inspects the incoming request’s User-Agent header. It compares the User-Agent against a bundled list of 20+ known AI crawler signatures (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, etc.). When a match is found, the visit is logged to a custom database table with timestamp, URL, and IP address.

Which AI crawlers are tracked?

The bundled crawler list includes: GPTBot (OpenAI/ChatGPT), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, Google-Extended (Google AI), CCBot (Common Crawl), Bytespider (ByteDance), cohere-ai, Applebot-Extended, Amazonbot, and more. The list is maintained and updated with each plugin release.

Will crawler logging slow down my site?

No. The detection and logging happen in a single database INSERT query during the template_redirect hook. The performance impact is negligible — typically under 1ms. Additionally, a cron-based cleanup job automatically prunes old entries based on your configured retention period.

Can I see which pages AI crawlers visit most?

Yes. The crawler log dashboard includes a sortable table view filterable by crawler type and date range. You can see exactly which URLs each AI engine scans, helping you understand what content AI search engines consider most relevant for your site.

Do I need to configure anything to start logging?

No configuration needed. Crawler detection starts automatically the moment you activate the SummitCite plugin. You can optionally adjust the log retention period and enable/disable specific crawlers in Settings → SummitCite → Crawler Log.

Can I export the crawler logs?

Yes. The crawler log dashboard includes a CSV export option that respects your current filters. You can export logs for a specific date range, crawler type, or the full dataset for compliance and analysis purposes.
